HERE ARE THE LATEST NEWS FOR TODAY:

Veteran radio broadcaster Percival Mabasa, more popularly known as Percy Lapid, was shot dead in his vehicle in Las Piñas City, police reported Monday evening.

According to Las Piñas City Police, Lapid was gunned down by two armed and unidentified suspects at the gate of a subdivision along Aria St., Barangay Talon Dos. In relation to this, Canada and European Union (EU) member states France, Netherlands, and Denmark on Tuesday expressed “grave concern” over the killing of veteran radio broadcaster Percival Mabasa, widely known as Percy Lapid. In a joint statement, Canada and Netherlands, co-chairs of the Media Freedom Coalition, urged the Philippine government for an immediate investigation on the incident, a call which France, Denmark, and the EU backed. “Journalist killings strike at the very core of media freedom & can create a chilling effect that curtails the ability of journalists to report news freely & safely,” it added. After a Philippine journalist Percy Lapid was shot in his vehicle in Las Piñas City on Monday, October 3, Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel III said the prevailing culture of violence and impunity in the Philippines remains a “serious challenge to the Marcos administration.”

Pimentel noted there are still at least 13 unresolved killings of journalists in the past 10 years.

Lapid, who was critical of both Duterte and Marcos administration, is the second journalist killed under the Marcos Jr. administration where attacks on journalists and press freedom commonly happened. President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. said his administration will "support and protect the rights of the media" as he acknowledged its role in people empowerment and the nation's development.

North Korea fired two ballistic missiles Thursday, Seoul's military said, as the UN Security Council met to discuss Pyongyang's earlier, highly provocative launch of a missile over Japan.

The launch is Pyongyang's sixth in less than two weeks, and comes two days after it fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan, prompting Tokyo to issue a rare evacuation warning.

South Korea's military said it had detected two short-range ballistic missiles launched from the Samsok area in Pyongyang towards the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.

"Our military has reinforced monitoring and surveillance and is maintaining utmost readiness in coordination with the United States," Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

Japan's coastguard also confirmed the launch of two potential ballistic missiles, with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida telling reporters that the recent testing spate was "unacceptable".

Yet on Saturday night, the PCSO made history — or rather became qualified to be cited by Ripley’s, the American franchise dealing in events so unusual that people doubt the claims — after 433 bettors beat the odds to win and share the P236-million Grand Lotto jackpot.

Each winner from that draw will get P545,245.24, which is subject to a final tax of 20 percent. Peter Julian Cayton, associate professor of UP’s School of Statistics, said in an interview that “over the past 20 years, we had only two or three winners, but the general pattern of these numbers did not have a structure as compared to the most recent multiples of 9 in a result.”

He said that combination, like other seemingly ridiculous combinations like 05-15-25-35-45-55, 01-02-03-04-05-06, “rarely happens, but [it] can.”

Workers with disabilities and senior citizens in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) held a cleanup activity at the Manila Baywalk Dolomite Beach on September 14 in support of the local celebration of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day 2022.

With the theme “Where Coastal Cleanup, Special Treats and Selling of PWDs Eco-Friendly Handicrafts Jam Together,” the cleanup activity was part of a two-day event led by the Persons with Disability (PWD) Desk of the DENR-Strategic Communication and Initiatives Service (SCIS).

The Philippines recorded 2,117 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, according to the Department of Health (DOH), raising the country's total to 3,953,886. Of the newly reported infections, 908 are from Metro Manila. Thirty-two new deaths were also recorded, raising the total number of people in the country who succumbed to the respiratory disease to 63,013. Active cases stood at 28,872, while the number of those who recovered from the illness climbed to 3,862,001.

The positivity rate for the week of September 25 to October 1 is at 15.1 percent, slightly lower than the 15.3 percent recorded the previous week, ABS-CBN Data Analytics Team head Edson Guido said. From Sept. 19 to 25, the country recorded an average of 2,556 daily infections, which is 22 percent higher compared to the previous week, the DOH said Monday. That week logged the highest number of cases in 4 weeks, or since the week of Aug. 22 to 28, according to the ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group.

DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the country can be attributed to multiple factors, including a person’s activities and lifestyle, the characteristics of circulating variants, the environment, and the opening up of different sectors. As of Sept. 27, some 73 million people in the country have been fully vaccinated against the respiratory disease.

ENTERTAINMENT: Movie stars, directors and fans descended on South Korea's port town of Busan Wednesday as Asia's largest film festival returned at full power post-pandemic, with an Iranian film opening the event.

Top Korean actors and Asian stars including Hong Kong's legendary Tony Leung are set to attend the Busan International Film Festival, which opened with a red carpet event and will run until October 14.

South Korea has cemented its status as a global cultural powerhouse in recent years, thanks in part to the explosive success of the Oscar-winning film "Parasite" and the Netflix series "Squid Game". But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Busan festival was reduced to a fraction of its usual scale in 2020, while last year's edition took place with a number of social distancing measures.

But the festival is back with no restrictions for 2022, with high-profile guests such as Japan's famed filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda flying in to discuss their latest projects.

"We feel fortunate to be able to play the role of Asia's best film festival again," festival director Huh Moon-young told reporters last month.

The festival will feature 243 movies from 71 countries, including 89 that will have their world premiere. Leung, 60, is best known for his collaborations with famed director Wong Kar-wai, and picked the six films himself -- which include Wong's "In the Mood for Love" (2000) and "Happy Together" (1997).
