On February 28, the MT Princess Empress
was reportedly half submerged in the vicinity waters of Balingawan Point,
Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, with 20 crew members onboard and 800,000 liters of
fuel oil.
From
Mindoro, DENR’s data showed that oil sightings were reported in Verde Island,
Batangas City, on March 20, which spurred the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to
elevate its response operations to Tier 3. Twelve
out of the 14 municipalities in Oriental Mindoro have been affected by the oil
spill caused by the sunken motor tanker MT Princess Empress, the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said on Saturday. In an update, the PCG shared the findings of the team aboard the
Japanese Dynamic Positioning Vessel (DPV) Shin Nichi Maru that conducted
Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) operations to assess the condition of MT
Princess Empress. The provincial government of Oriental Mindoro is now looking
at drafting a recovery plan after the sunken M/T Princess Empress has been
located off the waters of Naujan town.
During
a press briefing on Wednesday, Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Dolor
thanked the government agencies involved in the clean-up operation of the
spilled oil, as he invited other stakeholders and agencies who are willing to
help.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) on Wednesday
said it is currently working with telecommunications companies to look into the
legality of the proposal to deactivate certain mobile phone applications and
services for users whose SIMs remain unregistered during the 90-day extension
for listing.
The government needs around 22 million SIM users to register
during the 90-day extension of the mandatory registration to be able to meet
its target of 110 million SIM. NTC Deputy Commissioner
Jon Paulo Salvahan said 87.4 million SIM were already registered based on the
government’s latest data.
“We foresee that it is only around that number, which is around
100 or 110 million, which are the legitimate users of these SIMs or meaning that
they are really using the SIMs for their ordinary or legitimate purposes,” he
explained.
President
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has approved the
90-day extension of the SIM registration, which was supposed to end on April
26, after authorities logged low turnout.

The World Health Organization has elevated the fast-growing
Omicron sublineage XBB.1.16 as a new variant of interest, and says it is
outcompeting the previously dominant XBB.1.5 in many regions.
WHO says that while this variant seems
to be spreading faster than previous variants, and escapes immunity – even in
people who’ve recently had the XBB.1.5 strain – it does not seem to be causing
more severe illness. Therefore, WHO says the risk from this variant is low.
XBB.1.16
is a descendant of the recombinant XBB, which is a mashup of two BA.2
sublineages. On social media, the variant has been nicknamed Arcturus, like the
brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere. Currently, it is the
dominant variant in India, where it is causing a wave of mostly mild illnesses.
But it has been spotted in 32 other countries, including the United States. While
the Philippines has one case which has been recovered.
